Two Ways

Support Vehicle & Support Squad
Our Support Squad will be at the checkpoint and finish line to provide snacks, water and cold towels for all hikers. You are encouraged to carry a small pack for any items you will need on the trails. However, if there are any extra items you only need part way through or at the end (i.e. change of shoes), you can place those in the Support Vehicle at the start of the hike.

*Note: Due to the continued closure of Quarry Rock, rerouting of section 4 and relocating of finish line may be required.

Parking & Shuttle

Parking at the start line (Whyte Lake trail parking lot) and checkpoint 3 (Lynn Valley) are limited, please consider carpooling or getting dropped off. Post-hike shuttle service back to your starting point can be arranged upon request.

Horseshoe Bay to Cypress Mountain (3 to 5 hours) - If you choose to start at Segment A -- the official start of the Baden-Powell trail -- you will meet at Horseshoe Bay Whyte Lake Trail Parking Lot at 4:30 am. 😲

Directions: While on Highway #1, take exit 4 for Woodgreen Dr toward Caulfeild Dr/Headland Dr. and follow Westport Rd. You will eventually circle under the highway where you will then see the entrance to the parking lot on your right.

The first segment is by far the most challenging one, with its elevation gain of just over 1,000 metres. It should only be attempted by experienced hikers in good physical condition. The trail begins at the parking lot for the trailhead to “Whyte Lake” on Westport Rd. in West Vancouver. The first section follows the TCT Trail (Trans-Canada Trail) from the parking lot until it connects with the BP just beyond Whyte Lake. It winds through treed areas, some of them quite steep, up a boulder field which is best traversed following a faint trail on the right-hand side, and then ascends the visual highpoint of the entire day: Eagle Bluff. From this scenic vista the trail heads back into the trees, up and over the summit of Black Mountain, swerves between small mountain lakes along boardwalks, and then finally down the steep switchbacks on Cypress Ski Hill until the first checkpoint at Cypress Bowl is achieved.

Cypress Mountain to Cleveland Dam (3 to 4 hours) - If you choose to begin at Segment B you will start from the Cypress Mountain parking lot area between 8 am and 9:30 am. Typically our checkpoint team will be set up near Black Mountain Lodge in a parked car. There will be snacks and refreshments so you can stock up for the start of your hike or restock if you're continuing on from a previous segment.

The second section follows the trail through the Cypress cross-country ski trails, gradually descending down the mountain and even between the backyards of British Properties residents. It crosses the Cleveland Dam and joins the second checkpoint in the park on the east side of the dam.

Cleveland Dam to Lynn Valley (3 to 4.5 hours) - The third section begins by hiking up Nancy Greene Way from Cleveland Dam to the Grouse Grind trailhead. The trail goes through the gate for the Grind entrance but instead of turning left to do the Grind, the BP continues right, traversing Grouse Mountain in the eastern direction. A short uphill section of 30 mins in duration leads to level hiking ground through treed areas for the remainder of this section until the final hour, when a steep descent on staircases leads to the road to Lynn Valley Headwaters. Hikers walk south down this road to the intersection at Evelyn St. where a sharp left turn is made, crossing the bridge at Rice Lake Rd and Marion Street over the Lynn Valley River (the bridge north of the suspension bridge, not the suspension bridge itself). The trail meets the third checkpoint at the pavilion in the park at the end of Lillooet Rd.

Lynn Valley to Deep Cove (3 to 4.5 hours) - The fourth and final section of the BP goes south along the western side of the Lynn Valley Suspension Bridge park, then turns east, crosses Lillooet Rd, Hyannis Dr, and Mountain Seymour Rd, follows up the final ascent section of the trail known as the “Seymour Grind” and then crosses the last road at Indian River Drive before circling past Quarry Rock and down eventually on to Panorama Drive in Deep Cove, the end of the hike and a very long day!

Theoretically it is relatively easy to navigate the trail by following the orange triangle signs with BP fleur-de-lis symbols. However, it is important to become as familiar with the trail beforehand for when trails become overgrown, as they do, signs can become hidden.
