Psychoeducational Assessment • Burnaby

What is Psychoeducational Assessment?

A psychoeducational assessment in BC is completed by a Registered Psychologist and primarily examines a child's cognitive and academic abilities using standardized tests. It often includes evaluation of social, emotional, and behavioural functioning as well.

The assessment process includes an initial parent interview, followed by testing sessions with the child, behavioural observations, rating scales completed by parents and teachers, and a review of report cards and previous reports.

A psychoeducational assessment may be beneficial for any child who has struggled with reading, writing, or math, who has challenges with attention that affect their learning, or who has expressed significant frustration and stress in the classroom. The results help the Registered Psychologist understand the child's cognitive and learning profile, identify strengths and areas of difficulty, and provide guidance to parents and schools on educational planning and how to best support the child's learning.

A psychoeducational assessment may or may not lead to a diagnosis — such as a learning disability, intellectual disability, or ADHD.

Please note: at this time BCG does not offer assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder, or comprehensive mental health assessments.
